Steve Radcliffe
I’ve been peering at the world through polished glass for nearly 40 years. Much of that time was through motion picture and television cameras. Arriflex, Bell & Howell, Éclair & CP-16 cameras were common 16mm tools of the motion picture trade. I was fortunate to have access to those cameras. Sony & Hitachi made my first television cameras and they were good in their day.
During those years I shot training and information programs, documentaries, freelanced & shot local news on film. All of that led me eventually to still photography and my first still camera, an Olympus OM-1. It’s broken but still on the shelf. I remember how wonderfully it fit in my hand. Of course it wasn’t an Arri BL. But picking it up just now, holding it, tripping the shutter brought me close to a weepy, Boehner moment and some wonderful memories.
I’ve since moved on to Digital and my 7D and very much enjoy the satisfaction of a hallelujah chimp. So, I’m now learning imagery from a new perspective, yes Martha you can turn the camera on its side. Remembering I have that option is sometimes challenging, but I’m getting better.
My photographic interests are varied and include landscapes, macro, architectural, perhaps informal portraits and who knows what. We’ll see where that polished glass feels most comfortable. Perhaps, just perhaps I’ll step out to stretch that comfort zone more and more over time.
